On the second day of practice fpr the Ferndale Footbrawlers, coach Sonny Fontenot had just as much to complain about as he did to rave about. "We started camp with a few goals to accomplish," Fontenot said, "one of them being working with Alvey to cut down on the INT's. We're working on his technique to try and make him a more accurate passer. We also need to work on our rush defense. Simply put, the SFL ran all over us last season."
The Footbrawlers addressed the rish defense problem by drafting 2 defensive tackles in the recent rookie draft. Max Todd was taken in the 3rd rd. of the draft, and should be a nice addition to the defensive line. He is a 1st team All-American out of Middle North Central Alaska State University, where he led the Polar Bears to a perfect 11-0 season and a Div. III-A title. The Footbrawlers also added 4th rd. DT Harry Dickinson (Eastern Hawaii Poly-Tech University).
While on the offensive side, the team drafted T Wilmer McKinnon (1st Rd., Southeastern Central New Mexico A&M University), who was the most sought after tackle in the land. Head coach Sonny Fontenot said McKinnon "is an absolute beast. A couple of 2nd team guys got hurt, and we had to tell him to reel it in a bit. He actually scares a few people out there" at 6'5", 295 lbs, he runs a 4.90 sec 40 yd dash, benches 425 lbs 30 times a day, and is all business when he steps onto the field. WR Augustus Taylor is shaping up to be a real force on the team, and is currently battling Elvis Albritton for the No. 2 spot on the WR depth chart.
Coach Fontenot went on to say that, "..we are going to be smart this season, and not taking any teams for granted. We fell into too many trap games in Season 2, and we won't do that again."
This reporter will reserve judgment until Season 3 playoffs, as the Footbrawlers have failed to advance very far in the playoffs the past two seasons. Hopefully the new additions to the team can turn things around.
