The SFL opened Season 4 on Monday, and the Footbrawlers once again showed their defensive dominance with a big win over the Oklahoma City Bombers by a score of 42-7.
The Brawlers completely stifled the Bombers defensively, allowing only 19 yds. rushing and 80 yds. passing. The Bombers managed to score the first TD of the game, but then the rout was on from there.
The Brawlers unveiled their new QB for the season, 5th rd. pick Kelly Dory of Midgetville State University in Midgetville, Arizona. Dory had a nice rookie debut, throwing 2 TD's and 1 INT on 18 of 29 passing for 213 yds. Nothing major to write home about, but still impressive considering the college he played for.
ORGASM Network caught up with Dory after the game, and he had this to say,
"I was a little nervous about my first game in the greatest football league in the nation, playing for the Brawlers. Alvey really helped me get acclimated to what I would be facing in the SFL. I'm used to practicing with midgets. It's no fun being the only guy over 6 ft. tall in a town full of dumbass midgets, whose best joke is 'How's the weather up there?'. That joke got old after the second time I heard it, and I had to endure it for 4 fuckin' years. I can't thank the Brawlers enough for getting me out of that hellhole. As for the rest of the season, I know it's a tough road ahead, but I am definitely up to the challenge. The last thing I want is for the Brawlers to regret the decision they made in drafting me, and I want to make the other teams that passed on me in the first four and a half rounds pay for their mistake."
Speaking of Alvey, who was the league's best rushing QB last season (and the season before), we wondered what he thought about being relegated to backup QB. "It ain't no thing. I know I sucked at passing the ball. I'm just glad I can help out and show my best skill, which is running the ball. Dory has been awesome in preseason, and he deserves the job. All I have to do is work on becoming a bit of a better passer. Hopefully the arm lengthening surgery I underwent in the off-season helps that."
Yes, this reporter is just as shocked as you about Alvey's attitude towards the rookie QB taking his job. Sounds like all is well in Brawlers camp.
Derward Grace had a big day, rushing for 147 yds and 3 TD's on 25 carries. Coach Sonny Fontenot had been quoted as saying that the Brawlers were going to commit to the run a lot more, especially since the addition of 1st rounder Leo Weber, a highly skilled OT from MIT. Weber scored an impressive 35 on the Chuck Test (the SFL's version of the Wonderlic test administered to NFL rookie prospects. The difference between them being that you take the Wonderlic after a long, hard conversation with Chuck. Who the hell is Chuck, you ask? Only SFL insiders know the answer to that. Any player revealing the identity of Chuck faces immediate expulsion from the league.) Weber was responsible for protecting Thurman Cason's backside last season at Grass Valley CC, before transferring to MIT for his senior season.
The Brawlers also introduced 2nd rd. pick Randy Cotchery (WR - Norristown CC) to the SFL. Cotchery caught 2 passes for 38 yds. Word is he will be an integral part of the Brawlers air attack. Cotchery was almost reached for comment.
Coach Sonny Fontenot spoke at a post game press conference, praising his defense and rookies for a great game.
"Yeah, I know it was just the Bombers, but these are the kinds of games that can be trap games for a great team such as ours. We have to go out there and perform at a high level every game, and when it comes to playing the better teams, raise the bar for ourselves and play lights out. The defense was spectacular today, and I am thoroughly impressed with Dory. He handled himself real well considering the pre-game pep talk from Chuck. Like I said in the off-season, we are committing more to the run this season than ever before, and that is going to open up the passing game big time. With the addition of Weber in the draft, and the addition of McKinnon from last season, we have one of the best O-line's in the league. We have a big game versus the Hookers next week, so we'll see how ready our team is against the pass."
Still no word on who Chuck is, but as soon as we find out, you'll be the first to know.
